The following EU schemes encourage diverse agricultural production, protect product names from misuse and imitation and help consumers by giving them information concerning the specific character of the products:
Three EU schemes known as
- PDO (protected designation of origin): covers agricultural products and foodstuffs which are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognized know-how
- PGI (protected geographical indication) covers agricultural products and foodstuffs closely linked to the geographical area. At least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation takes place in the area.
- TSG (traditional specialty guaranteed) highlights traditional character, either in the composition or means of production

To register a Product under this scheme:
- A group of producers must define the product according to precise specifications.
- Application is forwarded:
- If you are a producer in the EU, you should send your application to your national authority: List of EU national authorities
- If you are a producer outside the EU, and if the name of the product is protected in your country, you can send the application directly to the Commission or via your national authority, electronically or by normal mail.
Some of Product group files include Fresh meat, Meat Products & Cheeses etc.
India, has two products in this list; Kangra Tea (applied) and Darjeeling tea has been registered as PGI authorized by Tea Board of India.
