India, as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection)Act, 1999 has come into force with effect from 15th September 2003.
From April 2004 till date, 195 GI Applications are registered under Indian IP. Among which Peruvian Pisco from Peru, Champagne from France & Napa Valley from USA, Scotch Whiskyrom UK, Prosciutto di Parma from Italy , Porto & Douro from Portugal, Tequila from Mexico are the goods from other parts of the world to get registration from Indian GI Registry office.
In 2013, there were 75 applications from all over the country for GI registration.
The top goods under which the applications were filed were Handicrafts, Textile, Agriculture, Manufactured, food stuff, Natural.
