The office of the Geographical Indications Registry, Chennai, has registered 288 GI from April 2004, as on December 30th, 2016.
Till date, Karnataka has the highest granted GI having 41 GI Registered, followed by Maharashtra with 35, Kerala with 24 GI and Tamil Nadu with 22. Various other states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttrakhand and West Bengal etc, including Union territories like Pondicherry and Jammu and Kashmir etc have also been Granted Geographical Indication.
The Latest in the list is Sangli Raisins from Maharashtra. The Banaganapalle mango from Telengana, Mangalwedha Jowar, Sindhudurg & Ratnagiri Kokum, from Maharashtra.
From the above table we can infer that in the year 2008 – 2009, has the highest number of GI granted.
Among the 34 classes of GI Applications includes varieties of spices to Beverages and Handicrafts to Agriculture. The top five categories are Handicrafts, Manufactured, Food Stuff, and Textile & Natural Goods.
